The Nitric Oxide & Biomaterials Group
Thematic Project
Our research is focused on the synthesis, characterization, and biomedical applications of polymeric biomaterials that release nitric oxide (NO), and on the understanding of the NO physiological mechanisms. We develop functionalized solid polymers and hydrogels for site-localized NO release and for the coating of implantable medical devices. Topical applications of our biomaterials were already shown to exert local vasodilation actions on the skin and on the gastric mucosa and to accelerate wound healing. Surfaces coated with our NO-releasing films display antimicrobial and antiplatelet actions.
